Black Friday deals AI shoppers can see and apply: sale prices, automatic discounts and codes
Short answer
AI shoppers see your price easily, but they don't always see your deal. A sale price lives on the product, so an agent reading your catalog picks it up. An automatic discount applies in the cart once the right items are in it. A discount code only works if the shopper, or their agent, knows the code and enters it at checkout. For Black Friday, put your main offer where agents can reach it, keep codes simple and public, and test every deal in a real cart.
Three ways to run a deal, and what an agent sees
An AI shopper is an assistant, like ChatGPT or an agent built into a browser, that shops for someone. Shopify gives these agents a set of WebMCP tools on every Liquid storefront. WebMCP is a proposed web standard that lets a page offer actions an agent can call. Shopify's docs say search_catalog and get_product return prices, update_cart adds or changes items, and get_cart returns line items and totals.
Most Black Friday deals use one of three methods:
- Sale price. You lower the product's price and show the old one crossed out.
- Automatic discount. Shopify applies it in the cart and checkout when conditions are met. No code needed.
- Discount code. The customer types a code at checkout.
Each one reaches an agent at a different point.
Sale prices: the deal agents see first
On Shopify, you set a sale price by putting the original price in the Compare-at price field and the new price in Price. Shopify says the compare-at price must be higher than the price for the sale to show. Only the sale price is shown at checkout.
Two details matter for AI shoppers:
- Variants must agree. Shopify says that if some variants have a compare-at price and others are empty, zero or different, the collection page won't show the product as on sale. Shopify also says a compare-at price of zero isn't the same as an empty field.
- Your theme isn't in charge on AI channels. Shopify says your theme doesn't control how sale prices appear on AI channels that find products through Shopify Catalog, such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot. If your store is eligible for Shopify Catalog, you can choose whether AI agents see compare-at prices. Each AI channel decides whether to show it.
The sale price is the actual price, so any tool that reads your price gets the deal.
Automatic discounts: the safest bet for agents
Shopify says automatic discounts apply in the cart and at checkout when eligibility conditions are met. Because no code is needed, an agent that adds the right items with update_cart triggers the discount the same way a person would. Shopify's docs say cart tools call the same standard storefront actions that apps use.
There's one catch, and it's a big one for "buy one, get one" offers. Shopify says customers need to add all eligible items to the cart. That includes the free or discounted item they get. If your offer is "buy a scarf, get a hat free," the hat has to be in the cart too. Say that plainly on the product page, so a person or an agent knows to add both.
Discount codes: only as good as where the code lives
Shopify says customers enter discount codes at checkout. Shopify suggests sending codes by email or displaying them on your store.
Agents can now apply codes on Shopify. Checkout WebMCP is Shopify's set of agent tools for checkout. Its update_checkout tool lets an agent add or remove a discount code when the buyer asks. Shopify's docs add two cautions:
- These tools register on eligible checkouts only. Otherwise the agent hands the buyer off to finish on the page.
- A code being accepted into the request "doesn't mean it applied." The agent has to check what actually applied.
Shopify also tells agents to show the buyer the current order and total before placing it, and to ask again if the total changes.
The practical problem is simpler. An agent can only enter a code it knows. If your Black Friday code lives only in an email or behind a sign-up pop-up, the agent has it only if the shopper shares it. If you want everyone to get the deal, make it automatic, or print the code in plain text on your site.
Stacking and timing: where good deals break
- Discounts don't combine by default. Shopify says you must set each discount's Combinations settings. If two discounts can't combine, Shopify applies the best one for the customer. A shopper who enters a code that doesn't combine sees "Discount couldn't be used with your existing discounts."
- Code limits. Shopify allows up to 5 product or order discount codes and 1 shipping discount code per order.
- Time zones. Shopify says discount start and end times follow the time zone set in your admin. A Black Friday deal set for midnight starts at midnight in your time zone, not the shopper's.
WooCommerce notes
WooCommerce has its own rules:
- Coupons must be switched on under WooCommerce > Settings > General.
- Codes aren't applied automatically. WooCommerce says core doesn't apply coupon codes on its own. Customers enter them at cart or checkout.
- Expiry dates are exclusive. WooCommerce says coupons can't be used on the expiry date you set. To run through Cyber Monday, set the expiry to the day after.
- Scheduled sale prices. You can schedule a sale price with From and To dates. WooCommerce says the sale stops displaying at 11:59 pm on the To date.
- Watch "Exclude sale items" and "Individual use only." These settings stop a coupon from working on sale items or alongside other coupons.

BFCM deal checklist
- Main offer is a sale price or automatic discount, not only a hidden code.
- Compare-at prices are set on every variant, or cleared on all of them.
- Buy X get Y offers say clearly which items must both be in the cart.
- Any public code is written in plain text on your site, not only in an image or pop-up.
- Combinations settings are checked on every discount.
- Start and end times are checked against your admin time zone.
- WooCommerce coupon expiry is set to the day after the sale ends.
- Each deal is tested in a real cart, then at checkout, stopping before payment (Shopify suggests this for combinations).
- Product and policy pages aren't blocked to OAI-SearchBot, OpenAI's search crawler. OpenAI says opted-out sites aren't shown in ChatGPT search answers.
FAQ
Can AI shoppers see my sale price? Usually, yes. A sale price is the product's actual price, and Shopify's catalog tools return prices. Whether the crossed-out old price shows depends on the channel.
Can an AI agent type in my discount code?
On eligible Shopify checkouts, yes, through Checkout WebMCP's update_checkout tool. It still needs to know the code.
Should I use an automatic discount or a code for Black Friday? For a store-wide deal you want everyone to get, automatic is simpler for people and agents. Codes suit targeted offers, like an email list.
Why did my code get replaced by a different discount? Shopify applies the best discount when two can't combine. Check the Combinations settings on both.
Does this matter if I'm on WooCommerce? Yes. The coupon and sale-date settings above decide what AI shoppers see.
