# Product reviews and AI shoppers: get your star ratings seen before Black Friday

> How ChatGPT, Shopify's agent catalog and Google use product reviews and star ratings, and what Shopify and WooCommerce stores should set up before BFCM.

## Short answer

When a shopper asks ChatGPT for "the best-rated gift for a coffee lover," reviews are part of what it weighs. OpenAI says ChatGPT may consider reviews when picking products, and may show review summaries built from public websites. Shopify's agent catalog lets agents filter by star rating and review count. To get your reviews counted before Black Friday, collect real reviews, use a review app that writes Shopify's standard rating fields, and mark up the ratings people can see on your product pages.

## Why reviews matter to AI shoppers

An **AI shopper** is an assistant, like ChatGPT or an agent built into a browser, that finds and compares products for someone. The platforms say reviews are part of the picture:

- **ChatGPT.** OpenAI's help page gives an example: for a costume search, ChatGPT "may consider available options, price, reviews, and ease of use." It may also show model-written **review summaries** of common likes and dislikes, plus labels like "Most popular." OpenAI says a "Budget-friendly" label might mean reviewers often mention good value.
- **Shopify's Global Catalog.** This is the catalog agents use to search across Shopify stores. Shopify's developer docs say an agent's search can filter by a **minimum star rating** and a **minimum number of reviews**. That page doesn't say where the ratings come from, so we won't guess.

The practical point: a product with no ratings can't pass a "4 stars and up" filter.

## Where AI shoppers get review data

There isn't one pipe. Based on the platforms' own pages, review data can reach AI shoppers in a few ways:

- **The public web.** OpenAI says ChatGPT's review summaries are "based on reviews from public websites." Reviews hidden behind a login or loaded in a way that's hard to read may not help you here.
- **Product feeds.** OpenAI's product feed spec has two optional fields: `review_count` and `star_rating`, on a 0–5 scale. The spec says to count product reviews only, not store reviews, and to leave the rating out when there are no reviews.
- **Shopify Catalog.** OpenAI says Shopify merchants' product data already reaches ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, with no extra work. Neither OpenAI nor Shopify's help page spells out whether review data is part of that.

What about agents on your own store? Shopify's **WebMCP tools** let a browser agent search your catalog and read product details on your live storefront. Shopify's docs say `get_product` returns variants, prices and stock. They don't mention ratings or reviews, so don't assume the tool passes them along.

## Shopify: use the standard rating fields

Shopify has two **standard metafields** for ratings. A metafield is an extra data field on a product. They are:

- **Product rating** (`reviews.rating`): the average rating.
- **Product rating count** (`reviews.rating_count`): the total number of ratings.

Shopify's docs say review apps should write to these fields and update them whenever a rating changes, and themes that show ratings should read from them.

You usually don't fill these in yourself. Shopify's developer docs say these rating fields aren't visible or editable in the Shopify admin. Approved review apps can join Shopify's **standard product review** program. Those apps save each review in a standard format, keep the totals up to date, and show a "Verified by Shop" badge. Their reviews become eligible to show in the Shop app.

Shopify also collects reviews itself through **Shop product reviews**. Shopify says only Shop customers who bought the product can leave one. They get a prompt after the order is delivered, can rate from 1 to 5 stars, and can add a comment.

What to do now: open your review app's settings or help docs and check whether it supports Shopify's standard rating metafields or the Shop review program. If you're unsure, ask the app's support team before the holiday rush.

## Google: show the stars you have, the right way

**Review markup.** Google's review snippet docs say to put an `aggregateRating` inside your Product markup, with an average rating and a rating or review count. Its main rules:

- The rating must be visible on the page, not just in the code.
- Rate a specific product, not a category or a list.
- Don't pull in reviews or ratings from other websites.
- Test pages with Google's Rich Results Test.

Many Shopify review apps add this markup for you. Check one product page in the Rich Results Test to be sure.

**Product ratings on Google Shopping.** Google's Merchant Center help says you need at least 50 product reviews before you apply to its Product Ratings program, and that reviews can take two to four weeks to go live after your first upload. Black Friday is November 27, 2026, so if you qualify and want this, start now.

## Keep reviews honest

OpenAI says it doesn't verify reviews and ratings. That doesn't make shortcuts safe. Google says not to include fake reviews, or reviews given for money, discounts or free products unless clearly disclosed. Shopify says it screens Shop reviews against its review policies.

The honest wins are simple. Ask real buyers after delivery, reply to critical reviews, and keep ratings tied to the right product.

## WooCommerce notes

WooCommerce's product reviews guide says you turn reviews on under WooCommerce > Settings > Products. Options include:

- Showing a "verified owner" label on reviews from customers who bought the product.
- Letting only verified owners leave reviews.
- Turning on star ratings, and making them required.

WooCommerce also has a **Customer review request** feature, still in beta, that emails customers one link to review the products from a completed order. Shopify's agent tools don't run on WooCommerce. For what's possible there, see [WebMCP for WordPress](/guides/webmcp-wordpress).

## Holiday reviews checklist

- [ ] Product reviews are turned on for the products you'll push for the holidays.
- [ ] Your review app supports Shopify's standard rating fields (or you've asked it).
- [ ] Review requests go out after delivery, so new buyers can rate before BFCM.
- [ ] Star ratings and review counts are visible on product pages, not hidden behind a click or login.
- [ ] One product page passes Google's Rich Results Test for review markup.
- [ ] No reviews copied from other sites, and any incentivized reviews are clearly disclosed.
- [ ] If you send a direct feed to OpenAI, `review_count` and `star_rating` describe product reviews only.
- [ ] If you want Google Shopping ratings and qualify, your application is in.

## FAQ

**Does ChatGPT use my product reviews?**
OpenAI says ChatGPT may consider reviews when choosing products and may show review summaries built from public websites. It doesn't promise that any one store's reviews will be used.

**Can a browser agent read my reviews through Shopify's WebMCP tools?**
Shopify's docs don't list ratings or reviews among what `get_product` returns. Keep ratings visible on the page and in your structured data.

**Do I need a special review app on Shopify?**
Not a special one, but a good fit. Look for an app that writes Shopify's standard rating fields or takes part in the standard product review program.

**Is it too late to get Google star ratings before Black Friday?**
For Google Shopping ratings, Google says it can take two to four weeks after your first upload, and you need at least 50 reviews to apply. Review markup on your own pages can be added sooner.

**Can I show reviews from other sites on my product pages?**
Google says not to aggregate reviews or ratings from other websites in your review markup. Keep marked-up ratings to reviews collected for that product on your store.
