## Short answer

AI shoppers often start a gift search the way people do: "gifts for a coffee lover," "stocking stuffers," "gifts for dad." On Shopify, agents can list your collections and browse the products inside them. If your gift guides are vague, hidden, unlinked or full of sold-out items, the agent has little to work with. Name each gift collection the way shoppers ask, fill it with conditions that drop out-of-stock and archived products, publish it, and link it from your menu.

## How AI shoppers browse your store

An **AI shopper** is an assistant, like ChatGPT or an agent built into a browser, that shops for someone. Shopify gives these agents **WebMCP tools** on every Liquid storefront. WebMCP is a proposed web standard that lets a page offer actions an agent can call.

Two of Shopify's tools matter most for gift guides:

- **`browse_store`** lists your collections, or browses the products in one. Shopify says the agent can also take the shopper to the collection page.
- **`search_catalog`** searches your products, collections, articles and pages. It returns matching products with prices and availability.

A **collection** is Shopify's word for a group of products shown together on one page, like "Gifts for Her." Shopify's own examples include seasonal products, such as holiday cards and decorations. On WooCommerce, the closest thing is a **product category**.

Search engines use these pages too. Google says it works out which pages matter by following links: from menus to category pages, then to products. Google also says its crawler generally doesn't type searches into your search box. So a gift guide that's only reachable through search may never be found.

## Name collections the way shoppers ask

When an agent lists your collections, the names are a big part of what it has to go on. "Holiday 2026 Edit" or "Collection 4" tells it very little. Clear names do the work:

- Gifts for him / Gifts for her / Gifts for kids
- Gifts for coffee lovers
- Stocking stuffers
- Gift sets
- Last-minute gifts (only if those items really ship fast)

Add a short plain-text description to each collection: who it's for and what's in it. Shopify lets you edit the collection's search engine listing (page title and meta description) too. Shopify notes that titles over 70 characters or descriptions over 320 characters might get cut off in search results.

## Build gift guides with conditions, not by hand

Shopify lets you add products to a collection by hand or automatically, using **conditions**. A condition is a rule like "tag includes gift-for-him." Shopify says conditions can match on title, type, vendor, tags, price, compare-at price, inventory stock and more. A collection can have up to 60 conditions.

Conditions keep a gift guide current through the season. A few that help:

- **Tag-based gift guides.** Tag products "gift-for-dad" or "stocking-stuffer," then build collections from those tags. Shopify warns that special characters in tags might not work as expected in conditions, so keep tags simple.
- **Hide sold-out items.** Add "Inventory stock is greater than 0." There's a catch: Shopify says a product condition is true if **any** variant matches. A sweater with only one size left still shows. Check your top gift items by hand.
- **Keep archived products out.** Shopify says archiving a product doesn't remove it from collections. Customers can't see archived products, but they still sit in the collection's item list. Add "Product status is not equal to Archived" to keep the list clean.
- **Manual additions stick.** Shopify says conditions don't remove products you added by hand. If you mix methods, review manual items before the season.

Shopify notes that a new collections model is replacing the older "manual" and "smart" collections. Your admin may show either one. The ideas above work in both.

## Publish, schedule and link

A gift guide nobody can reach doesn't help anyone. Shopify's collection settings cover three things worth checking:

- **Sales channels.** Make sure the collection is available on your Online Store channel. You can also set a future publishing date, which is handy for gift guides you build in October and launch in November.
- **Menus.** Shopify says making a collection visible on the Online Store doesn't automatically add it to your menus. You have to add the link yourself.
- **URL handles.** Shopify generates a web address for each collection. If you change it, Shopify offers a redirect from the old one. Shopify also warns against changing it too often.

Shopify also says changing a collection's availability doesn't change the products inside it. To make a product available or not, you update the product itself.

## Filters: useful, with limits

**Filters** are the "size," "price" and "color" options shoppers click on a collection page. On Shopify they come from Shopify's Search & Discovery app. Shopify says filters can be built from product options, metafields (extra custom fields on a product) and standard fields like price, availability, type, tags and vendor.

Limits worth knowing before the holidays:

- Shopify says collections with more than 5,000 products don't display filters. Split huge gift guides into smaller ones.
- A filter shows up to 100 values on your store.
- Your theme must support filters, or shoppers won't see them.

Shopify's WebMCP docs don't say whether agents use your storefront filters. So don't rely on filters alone. Make the collection itself tightly focused.

## WooCommerce: categories and tags

WooCommerce groups products with **categories**, **tags** and **attributes**. WooCommerce says categories are hierarchical, so a "Gifts" parent can have "Gifts for Him" and "Gifts for Her" below it. Tags are flat labels, and attributes power variations and filtering.

WooCommerce lets you add a description and image to each category, and choose whether the category page shows subcategories, products or both. Every product must be in a category. Products with none go into "Uncategorized," which you can rename. Don't leave holiday products sitting there.

WooCommerce doesn't include Shopify's agent tools. For what's possible on WordPress, see [WebMCP for WordPress](/guides/webmcp-wordpress).

## FAQ

**Can an AI shopper browse my gift collections?**
On Shopify, yes. The `browse_store` tool lists collections and the products in them. Shopify says agent support is currently limited to Chromium-based browsers.

**Will an AI agent find a collection that isn't in my menu?**
It might, through `browse_store`. People and search engines often won't. Google says it finds pages mainly by following links, so link every gift guide.

**Why does a sold-out product still show in my gift guide?**
Shopify counts a product as matching if any one variant matches. Check stock by hand on your top gifts.

**Do I need a separate page for every gift idea?**
No. A handful of focused collections usually beats dozens of thin ones.

**Is this about product data?**
Partly. Collections are only as good as the tags, types and stock behind them. For those facts, see [Is your product data telling AI shoppers the wrong things?](/guides/product-data-ai-shoppers-holidays) or run a [free product-data check](/scan?ref=blog).
