# Gift cards and AI shoppers: last-minute holiday gifts that agents can actually buy > How AI shoppers find, buy and redeem gift cards, what Shopify's agent tools can and can't do, and what to set up on Shopify and WooCommerce before the holidays. On Shopify, a gift card is a product, so an agent can find it and add it to the cart like anything else. The weak spots are the recipient details and the redemption step. Shopify's agent docs don't cover the recipient form, and they don't list gift cards among the checkout fields an agent can fill. Set up a real gift card product, make the recipient form work, and tell shoppers plainly how delivery and redemption work. ## Why gift cards matter late in the season Shopify says that when you fulfill an order with a gift card product, the customer or recipient gets a **digital gift card** with a unique code. Nothing ships, so a gift card still works after your last shipping cutoff. An **AI shopper** is an assistant, like ChatGPT or an agent built into a browser, that shops for someone. Shopify gives these agents **WebMCP tools** on every Liquid storefront. WebMCP is a proposed web standard that lets a page offer actions an agent can call. ## How an agent finds and adds a gift card Shopify says each gift card value, called a **denomination**, is saved as a variant of the gift card product. That's useful. Shopify's `get_product` tool returns a product's variants and prices, and `update_cart` adds a chosen item to the cart. So "add the mid-size gift card" maps neatly onto tools agents already use. To help agents and people find it: - **Give it a clear title and description.** Shopify's own example title is "Birthday gift card." A seasonal version like "Holiday gift card" works the same way. - **Add it to collections.** Shopify lets you add gift card products to collections, so put it in your gift guides. One limit to know: Shopify says customers can't enter a custom amount for a gift card on your storefront. Pick denominations that cover the common gift sizes. ## The recipient gap Many gift card buyers want the card emailed straight to someone else. Shopify supports this with **recipient fields**: recipient email, plus an optional name, message and "send on" date. If no date is set, the card is sent right away. Shopify's developer docs say you can schedule a send up to 90 days ahead, and the message can be up to 200 characters. Here's the catch. Shopify's developer docs say these recipient details are added through your theme's product form, using **line item properties**. Those are extra details attached to an item in the cart. Shopify's WebMCP docs describe `update_cart` as adding items, changing quantities and removing items. They don't mention recipient details or line item properties. So don't assume an agent can fill in the recipient form. What happens if the details are missing? Shopify says that when a customer buys a gift card without completing the recipient form, the **New gift card** email goes to that customer. The buyer still gets the code and can forward it. Say this plainly on the gift card page, so nobody panics: "No recipient email? We'll send the code to you, ready to forward." **Theme support matters.** Shopify says the recipient feature came with version 9.0.0 of its free Online Store 2.0 themes and works in the Dawn and Horizon families. It doesn't apply to vintage themes. Check your theme editor for the "Show recipient information form for gift card products" option. ## Redeeming: where agents step back Shopify says customers redeem a gift card by entering its code in the gift card field at checkout. Other details from Shopify: - Gift cards can be used together with discount codes. - More than one gift card can be used on one order. - The balance applies to the whole order, including taxes and shipping. - A gift card can't be used to buy another gift card. Shopify's **Checkout WebMCP** tools let an agent update parts of the checkout. Shopify's docs list contact details, delivery, discount codes, store credit and saved Shop Pay cards. They don't mention gift cards, and they say checkout doesn't accept new card details from the agent. The buyer chooses any other payment method on the checkout page. In practice, plan on the shopper typing their gift card code themselves. Shopify also tells agents to show the buyer the current order and total before placing it, and to ask again if the total changes. ## Setup mistakes that break gift cards - **A "gift card" that isn't a gift card product.** Shopify says a gift card is created automatically only when the order contains a real gift card product. A regular product named "Gift card" doesn't create one. - **Discounting with compare-at price.** Shopify says not to use the compare-at price field for gift cards. Use discount codes or automatic discounts instead. Shopify says customers can check a balance from the link in their gift card email. Answer these in your FAQ. Shopify also notes that gift card laws vary by region, so check with a local expert on expiry rules. ## WooCommerce notes WooCommerce sells digital gift cards through its **Gift Cards** extension. WooCommerce's guide says: - The **Send as gift?** setting under WooCommerce > Settings > Gift Cards decides whether customers can buy cards for others. - Each gift card order creates a unique code that's emailed to the recipient. - The recipient can enter the code at checkout, or add it to their account for later. - Codes stay valid indefinitely by default. You can set an expiry per gift card, counted from the delivery date. - Physical gift cards aren't supported. WooCommerce doesn't include Shopify's agent tools. For what's possible on WordPress, see [WebMCP for WordPress](/guides/webmcp-wordpress). ## Holiday gift card checklist - [ ] Gift card is set up as a real gift card product, not a regular product. - [ ] Denominations cover the gift sizes shoppers ask for. - [ ] Gift card is published and added to your gift guide collections. - [ ] Recipient form is turned on (or your theme is updated to support it). - [ ] Gift card page explains what happens when no recipient email is given. - [ ] Gift card discounts use codes or automatic discounts, not compare-at price. - [ ] FAQ answers expiry, balance checks and lost codes. - [ ] You've test-bought a gift card with and without recipient details. ## FAQ **Can an AI shopper buy a gift card from my store?** On Shopify, an agent can find the gift card product and add a denomination to the cart with the same tools it uses for any product. The shopper still confirms the order. **Can the agent send the gift card straight to the recipient?** Don't count on it. Shopify's agent docs don't cover the recipient form. Without recipient details, the code goes to the buyer, who can forward it. **Can an agent apply a gift card at checkout?** Shopify's Checkout WebMCP docs don't list gift cards. Expect the shopper to enter the code on the checkout page. **Why didn't a gift card get created after an order?** Shopify says that happens when the item was a regular product named like a gift card. Set it up as a gift card product. **Is this about product data?** Partly. The gift card's title, description and denominations are product facts.
